Hiya!

I'm Michelle Collins and I’m an Assistant Editor at Woman's World magazine. In May 2014, I received a Bachelor of Arts in Editing, Writing, and Media with a minor in Communications from Florida State University (Go ‘Noles!). Originally born in the Netherlands, I spent my first two years of life growing up in England, and then moved to sunny Orlando, Florida. I spent the rest of my childhood in central Florida before packing up and heading off to the Florida panhandle for college. I now reside in New York City's Upper West Side, where I've been living since May 2014.

At Woman’s World, I was an Editorial Assistant for a mere six months when I served as the interim Crafts editor, ultimately leading to my promotion and permanent coverage of that section. Through juggling both positions at once, I learned the absolute importance of organization, time management, and a positive attitude to meet our tight, weekly deadlines. I’m also required to write puns on a daily basis (which quickly became my favorite part of my job!). I also cover pages with longer research-based articles and write a weekly round up of products in a short, concise manner while still explaining each item’s purpose.

Throughout my collegiate years, I managed to get tons of magazine experience. Starting at CLUTCH Magazine, Florida State’s premier fashion magazine, I managed to dabble in a few different positions. As the Art Director, I planned and produced the visual aesthetic of the magazine – everything from fonts, colors, and photo selections, down to creating the fliers to promote our model castings and release party. I then became CLUTCH’s Blog Editor, where I managed our team of contributing writers, edited and scheduled the blog posts, and revamped the design of the site. I finished my senior year as the magazine’s Content Editor, where I read through every article, making sure it followed our style, voice, and had no grammatical or factual errors.

The summer before my senior year, I moved back to central Florida for an editorial internship at Orlando Style Magazine. I spent the summer writing articles for the Orlando Style, Tampa Style, and the publication’s website. I also edited photos through Photoshop, created spreads for the print magazine using InDesign, and uploaded content through the company’s CMS for the site. Social media was also a large part of my position – I managed both Orlando Style and Tampa Style’s Twitter account, raising Orlando Style’s following 11% in 3 months. I created the publications Pinterest account from scratch, picking and choosing content that I believed our readers would love. After leaving my summer internship, I was asked to continue my work with Orlando Style as a contributing writer, a job I did while studying abroad in London and continued through my last semester in Tallahassee.

But I haven’t just limited myself to print publications.

Freelance writing has been something I’ve enjoyed all throughout my journalism career. I started as a freelance writer for Uloop Student News Network, where I was promoted to FSU’s Campus Editor after three months with the site. I’ve also had articles published with The Huffington Post and ThoughtCatalog.com.

I'm interested in everything media-related. Web, print, social media, SEO, web production, graphic design—It’s all areas I love! Let's get in touch!
